Fire on Shanty Hill Takes Five Lives
May 16, 1860 - Madison, WI

A shanty owned by Edward McCarty, near University Avenue & Lake Street burned early in the morning when everyone was asleep. Mrs McCarthy died in the fire, she was pregnant and found with the remains of an infant child in her arms.

Edward tried to save his family and was badly burned, he died four days later.

A neighbor, John Maloy, was able to rescue one child, but Maloy would die three days later.
