James Caravello climed onto a tree and dangled his leg into the polar bear cage at Vilas Zoo. He had been ordered away only a
few minutes before. A bear got ahold of his leg and ripped flesh from the leg and clawed his back.
Caravello died at St. Mary's Hospital on September 13 from an infection due to the injuries he suffered.
Women fainted as rescuers beat the bear away with sticks and stones hurled through the cage bars.
