Oct 2, 1987 - Madison, WI

A prisoner serving a 175-year term for attacking two elderly women was recaptured after he shot a deputy and escaped from custody. Police Lt. Mike Masterson said searchers had spotted a broken window with blood near the Dane County airport and took LaRon McKinley into custody.

McKinley escaped at an intersection just south of the airport, Masterson said. The capture came about three hours later. McKinley was shackled by the legs and arms, was being transported by two Milwaukee County sheriff's deputies.

He pulled a small handgun and he shot one of the deputies in the back of the neck, the deputy was believed to be in good condition. The second deputy sustained a broken ankle.

McKinley was sentenced in 1986 to a total of 175 years in prison after being convicted in Dane County Circuit Court of attacking two elderly women in July 1984. He was convicted of armed robbery, burglary, kidnaping, false imprisonment, aggravated battery, endangering safety and felonious possession of a firearm.
